An invaluable habit, as a home educating parent, is to cease each opportunity to teach your children some of the little, and some of the most important lessons in life: each situation, each moment of silence, and each daily crazy adventure.
One often overlooked occasions to do this is through music! Music is a way to teach your children, without giving any verbal or formal instruction at all! We had the privilege of reviewing Smart Kidz Radio: Member’s On-Demand Radio Program Library, 6-month subscription.
Smart Kidz radio is a subscription based program that allows you to access radio programs that are educational, inspirational, and patriotic on demand costing $4.99/month. There is a free option to listen to live streaming, however you are not able to choose which program to listen to without a subscription.
My “toddler school time” is one of the highlights of my day. EVERYTHING is interesting to them. We go over their letters, we read books, we look at picture books, we bake cookies, we chop vegetables, we play with bubbly water, we color on coloring sheets… and we do all of this while listening to Smart Kidz Radio. They love the music about “Early Learning Skills.” These songs are about brushing teeth, taking naps, eating healthy… all sorts of fun topics and are instructional and entertaining. I can tell they are listening intently while we go about our tasks.
My older kids enjoyed listening to music that was from other cultures. They enjoyed interpreting the music to dance and imagine what other cultures look like. They enjoyed the programs that were geared toward their age (6-10 year old) that were about situations they encounter such as babysitting, being a consumer, earning money, how to take care of themselves, and how to deal with conflicts with others to name a few topics.
All my children love audio books and mysteries! With an extreme passion! We enjoyed listening to the “Haunted House on Phantom Ridge” together. Anytime we can turn to an audio production instead of the television is a win! We love using our imagination, listening skills, and inspiring my children in their story-telling and story-writing skills.
There are learning programs that are part of a “Explore Your World” series. One is about Spiders and my boys especially LOVED these. My girls on the other hand, asked me to turn it off because it grossed them out.
All of these learning experiences have happened via music! We have enjoyed learning while outside riding our bikes, sitting quietly at a coffee house, driving in our car while campaigning, cooking dinner or baking desserts, and during study time and quiet hour!
